Our local area offers some of the best coastal walking in South Tenerife. These three routes, starting right from your doorstep in the Golf del Sur, San Blas, or Amarilla Golf area, are perfect for exploring the surrounding coastline and local villages.
This is the most popular and accessible walk, perfect for a sunset stroll or a lunchtime expedition to a traditional fish restaurant.
Route Type Linear (One Way)
Distance Approx. 3.5 km (2.2 miles)
Estimated Time 40 - 50 minutes (One Way)
Difficulty Easy (Mostly smooth, paved promenade/boardwalk)
Start Point Anywhere along the Golf del Sur coastal path, e.g., San Blas.
End Point Los Abrigos Harbour
Start at the Coast: Begin your walk by heading East (with the sea on your right) along the main promenade section of Golf del Sur, passing the San Blas commercial area.
The Wooden Boardwalk: The smooth promenade transitions into a famous wooden boardwalk. This beautiful section is easy to walk and offers superb sea views, particularly over to the Montaña Roja in the distance.
Amarilla Golf & Port: You will pass the boundary of Amarilla Golf before the path narrows slightly and approaches the little Port of Los Abrigos.
Arrival in Los Abrigos: The path merges with a pavement leading right into the heart of the village. Los Abrigos is a quiet, authentic fishing village known for its cluster of outstanding seafood restaurants around the little harbour.
Enjoy & Return: Take time to enjoy the atmosphere, perhaps stop for a drink or some fresh fish.
Walk Back: The simplest option is to retrace your steps (approx. 40-50 minutes).
Bus (Recommended): Catch the TITSA Bus Line 470 from the main road stop in Los Abrigos back towards Golf del Sur/San Blas. The journey is very quick (less than 10 minutes).
Taxi: A quick and inexpensive taxi ride (approx. 5-7 minutes).
This route is for those who want a change of scenery and an unforgettable natural monument to climb.
Route Type Linear (Requires Bus) then Circular Loop
Distance Approx. 4 km loop (from El Médano to the summit and back)
Estimated Time 1.5 - 2 hours (Includes the ascent)
Difficulty Moderate (The summit path is steep with loose gravel)
Start Point El Médano Town (Access via Bus)
Highlight Climbing the distinct Montaña Roja (Red Mountain) for 360-degree views.
Get to El Médano: Take the TITSA Bus Line 470 from Golf del Sur to the main bus stop in El Médano.
Walk to the Mountain: From the town square (a great spot for a coffee!), walk along the main golden beach (Playa Leocadio Machado) towards the huge, reddish-brown volcano ahead – Montaña Roja.
Playa La Tejita: The path circles the base of the mountain, leading you to the vast, protected beach of Playa La Tejita on the other side. This area is part of the Montaña Roja Special Nature Reserve.
The Summit Ascent: The trail to the summit (171m) is clearly marked from the La Tejita side. Be prepared for a short, moderately steep climb with loose volcanic gravel. The views from the top are spectacular, offering a unique perspective of the airport, the coast, and Mount Teide.
Return: Descend carefully the same way. You can return to El Médano for lunch or catch the bus back to Golf del Sur from the main road.
Footwear: Trainers or light walking boots are essential for the loose gravel on the mountain ascent.
Weather: El Médano is known as a surfing hub and can be windy. Check the forecast and dress appropriately.
A relaxed walk that explores some of the unique geological features of the coast, finishing in the traditional, working town of Las Galletas.
Route Type Linear (Requires Bus or Taxi to start)
Distance Approx. 4 km (2.5 miles)
Estimated Time 50 - 60 minutes (One Way)
Difficulty Easy (Mix of urban pavement and natural coastal track)
Start Point Costa del Silencio (Montaña Amarilla area)
End Point Las Galletas Harbour
Get to Costa del Silencio: Take the TITSA Bus Line 470 from Golf del Sur to the Ten Bel stop in Costa del Silencio. Walk towards the coast to find the distinctive Montaña Amarilla.
Montaña Amarilla (Yellow Mountain): Take a moment to admire this striking geological formation of layered yellow-tinged rock. The natural, crystal-clear rock pools here are popular for swimming and snorkelling.
The Coastal Path: Locate the coastal path heading West (with the sea on your left). The trail is flat and relatively easy, giving you views of the rugged coastline.
Into Las Galletas: The path leads you into the main resort of Las Galletas. Follow the promenade past the small beach and straight to the Harbour.
Local Life: Las Galletas is a bustling, authentic town with a working harbour, a fish market, and plenty of traditional cafés and bars away from the main tourist strip.
Bus (Recommended): The TITSA Bus Line 470 runs regularly from Las Galletas back to Golf del Sur.
Continue: If you're feeling energetic, you can continue the coastal walk further west towards Palm-Mar (a longer and rougher route).
While our coastal paths are generally easy and well-maintained, the Tenerife sun and terrain require a little preparation to ensure your walk is enjoyable and safe.
Hydration is Key: The sun is strong, even in winter. Always carry a minimum of 1 litre of water per person, especially if you plan to walk both ways or tackle the Montaña Roja ascent.
Sun Protection: This is non-negotiable! Apply a high-factor sunscreen before you leave, and remember to reapply, particularly if you stop for a swim. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are essential for protecting yourself from the glare.
Footwear: For the easy, paved promenades (like the walk to Los Abrigos), comfortable trainers (sneakers) are perfectly fine. For the more natural coastal trails and the climb up Montaña Roja (Route 2), we strongly recommend sturdy trainers or walking shoes with good grip, as the terrain can be uneven and rocky.
Timing Your Walk: To avoid the most intense heat, try to walk earlier in the morning (before 11:00 AM) or later in the afternoon (after 4:00 PM). This is also when the lighting is best for photography!
Mobile Phone: Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged before setting out. While our routes are popular, it's always useful for calling a taxi, checking the bus timetable, or in case of an emergency.
Bus Cards (Bono/Ten+ Card): If you plan on taking the bus for your return journey (highly recommended for Routes 1 and 3), consider buying a Ten+ Card (Tenerife's rechargeable public transport card) or a single bus ticket from the driver to make the journey simpler and sometimes cheaper.
